Lost in the Supermarket is a device developed to address the conundrum faced by Mick Jones, described in Joe Strummer's lyrics for the Clash: The guitarist feels disorientated in his local shop; frustrated in his attempt to find freedom through consumption, he can 'no longer shop happily'. This feeling of disorientation can be compounded when visiting unfamiliar places. Lost in the Supermarket cross-wires several theories of how we navigate in urban spaces. Feeling lost, away from home, Paul Augé has noted how travellers look for familiar products to give them a reassuring point of reference. By following Kevin Lynch's recommendations, we can look to arrange these sequentially to build routes; from this, we link our routes together to make a map and to get a reassuring 'overview' of the new location. Using this technique, you'll never get lost again.
